/ To Live Inside a Second

A Pieve Tesino convivono due anime storiche, due sedimenti ben distinti che si sono depositati negli ultimi tre secoli; uno ci parla di una storia collettiva – storie di singoli uomini – i quali, partendo dal Tesino con determinazione, coraggio e spirito di sacrificio portarono in tutta Europa le stampe che ritraevano i soggetti dell’epoca; il secondo strato è la singola storia di un uomo che invece l’Europa l’ha immaginata e rincorsa, Alcide De Gasperi, statista italiano e padre fondatore della Comunità europea. Tra questi due strati se pur distinti, troviamo dei punti di contatto, temi sui quali il lavoro di Benjamin Jones si sofferma.
To Live Inside a Second – Vivere dentro a un secondo – è un lavoro diffuso che si snoda tra i vicoli e crea momenti di sosta in rapporto con le architetture, la morfologia del borgo e l’intorno; un percorso che vuole mettere in relazione il visitatore con il tempo come quello che trascorreva tra chi partiva per il mondo e chi restava e con la distanza, inimmaginabile per l’epoca. Nel lavoro dell’artista ogni singola immagine viene realizzata da due esposizioni sullo stesso foglio di pellicola fotografica e ogni esposizione colloca il sole su un bordo dell’inquadratura; racchiudendo il cielo tra due soli Jones rappresenta la simultaneità – della vita a Pieve e altrove nel mondo – e la distanza. Il sole nel cielo diventa quindi il segno universale del passaggio del tempo, l’elemento che racchiude la speranza tra la partenza e il ritorno.
Al centro del percorso è presente una grande immagine con un dettaglio invernale del giardino d’Europa dedicato a Alcide De Gasperi; una vegetazione in attesa nella quale ritroviamo la speranza sotto forma di baccello pieno di semi, semi che si sono in parte sparsi e che posizionano ancora una volta questo luogo al punto di partenza di un viaggio.
Le opere, in due differenti formati, ci suggeriscono il punto di origine filologico, piccole storie di tante persone, la grande storia di un singolo che ha influenzato quella di tutti.

Una Boccata d’Arte è il progetto d’arte contemporanea promosso da Fondazione Elpis. Ogni anno 20 paesi, uno per regione accolgono 20 artiste e artisti italiani e internazionali di età formazione e pratiche differenti. Invitati a trascorrere un breve periodo di residenza gli artisti realizzano 20 interventi in dialogo con il territorio e con chi lo abita. Un itinerario culturale che mette in luce le caratteristiche uniche dei piccoli centri attraverso lo sguardo inedito degli artisti. 

EN / Two historical souls coexist in Pieve Tesino, two distinct sediments that have been deposited over the last three centuries; one speaks to us of a collective history – stories of individual men – who, setting out from Tesino with determination, courage and a spirit of sacrifice, took the prints that portrayed the subjects of the time all over Europe; the second layer is the individual story of a man who instead imagined and pursued Europe, Alcide De Gasperi, Italian statesman and founding father of the European Community. Between these two layers, though separate, there are points of contact, themes on which Benjamin Jones’ work dwells.
To Live Inside a Second is a diffuse work that winds its way through the alleyways and creates pauses in relation to the architecture, the morphology of the village and its surroundings; a journey that aims to put the visitor in touch with time, like the time that passed between those who left for the world and those who stayed, and with distance, unimaginable in that period. In the artist’s work, every single image is made from two exposures on the same sheet of photographic film and each exposure places the sun on one edge of the frame; enclosing the sky between two suns, Jones depicts simultaneity – of life in Pieve and elsewhere in the world – and distance. The sun in the sky therefore becomes the universal sign of the passage of time, the element that embodies hope between departure and return.
At the centre of the itinerary is a large image with a winter detail of the Garden of Europe dedicated to Alcide De Gasperi; vegetation expressing expectation, in which we find hope in the form of a pod full of seeds, seeds that are partly scattered and that once again position this location at the starting point of a journey.
The works, in two different formats, show us the philological point of origin, small stories of many people, the great story of a single person who influenced that of everyone.

Una Boccata d’Arte is the contemporary art project promoted by Fondazione Elpis. Each year, 20 villages, one for each region, host Italian and international artist of different ages, backgrounds and practices. During short residencies, these artists create 20 works in dialogue with the local areas and their inhabitants, offering a cultural itinerary that showcases the unique characteristics of small towns through the artists’ original gaze.
